Terry Yorath’s funeral

It was a great privilege for Côr Meibion Taf to receive an invitation to take part in Terry Yorath’s funeral service in Leeds on 26 January. The former captain and manager of the Welsh football team died following a short illness earlier in the month aged 75. Terry was a Cardiff boy but settled in Leeds as a young man to pursue his football career. However, his pride in being Welsh and his commitment to Wales never wavered. He represented his country 59 times between 1969 and 1981 before going on to manage the national team between 1988 and 1993. It was therefore appropriate that a Welsh male voice choir from Cardiff had the honour of providing the musical items in the service.
With the Welsh flag claiming a prominent place in The Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church the coffin entered the church to the sounds of Hen Wlad fy Nhadau. In a moving service the first hymn was Cwm Rhondda. The choir went on to sing Ar Hyd y Nos and then Danny Boy, in memory of Daniel, Terry’s son who died suddenly in 1992 when he was only 15 years old. The service ended with You’ll Never Walk Alone, a song which is not only associated with Liverpool football club but also with the tragedy of the fire at Valley Parade, the home of Bradford City. 56 fans were killed that day in May 1985 and Terry was injured as he tried to save fans from the flames. Terry attended all 56 funerals.
The wake at Elland Road, the home of Leeds United, provided a valuable opportunity for the members of the choir to meet the family and friends and share memories of one of the greats of Welsh football. And before the long journey back to Cardiff there was one more opportunity to celebrate Terry Yorath’s life in song. With rousing renditions of the hymns Blaenwern and Gwahoddiad the day came to an end. A sad occasion, yes, but an unforgettable experience for all choir members which strengthened even further the bond between South Wales and Yorkshire.

Geraint Thomas: The Retirement Party 16 November 2025
Côr Meibion Taf has been very fortunate over the past few years to benefit from the close relationship that has developed between us and Geraint Thomas, the cyclist from Cardiff and one of the greatest athletes Wales has ever produced. Geraint’s professional career ended earlier this year and we were there to welcome him at Cardiff Castle at the end of his last race in September.
On Sunday, 16 November, a retirement party was held for Geraint at the Wales Millennium Centre and CMT was there once again to share in the celebrations. Thanks for the opportunities Geraint and happy retirement to you!

The start of the Rugby World Cup in Japan was celebrated in Acapela Studios in Pentyrch by Côr Meibion Taf (the male voice choir from Cardiff who rehearse on Sunday evenings at Salem Chapel, Canton – cormeibiontaf.com ). The choir’s relationship with Acapela started when it recorded a number of Christmas carols at the studios. This time, the venue was draped in Welsh flags, tackle bags and post protectors creating an exciting pre-tournament atmosphere.
The choir’s conductor and renowned baritone, Steffan Jones, sang solos including a rendition of the ever popular Welsh folk song, Ar Lan y Môr, which he sang during the choir’s performance at the Pantheon in Rome and has since gone viral. The choir’s accompanist is the highly accomplished, Lowri Guy. Côr Meibion Taf shared the stage with local talent, Catrin Herbert who sang a number of her own modern compositions.
The compere for the evening was the local broadcasting celebrity, Huw Llywelyn Davies, who is a member of the bass section of the choir. He announced that both Catrin and Côr Meibion Taf would be releasing new CDs in the near future.
Following a very successful evening, Côr Meibion Taf will no doubt be returning for another gig – before the next World Cup!

Bethesda 30th March 2019
The local Welsh newspaper in Bethesda, LLAIS OGWAN, carried a report of Côr Mebion Taf’s visit to Snowdonia where they shared the stage with the renowned Côr Penrhyn, the quarrymen’s choir in the imposing Capel Jerusalem, Bethesda. The relationship between the two choirs was established when Côr Penrhyn came to sing in the National Stadium
at a Cymru v Scotland international. A joint concert was held the night before in Capel Salem, Canton. Since this venture, Côr Caernarfon followed suit the following season. It appears that this arrangement between Côr Meibion Taf and visiting choirs might become a permanent fixture – watch this space!
